Paleo Staples: Berries and Nuts

A lot of the most common food staples are acceptable for the paleo dieter to consume. But some paleo staples are more necessary than others, and two of the most necessary paleo staples are berries and nuts.

While meat consumption should be increased for paleo dieters, nuts still play an important role. Nuts are high in fat, especially omega 3’s, and since the paleo diet calls for increased fat consumption, nuts play a vital role in the diet.

Additionally, berries are another important part of the paleo diet since non-starch vegetables and fruits should comprise at least 35% of your caloric intake. These fruits are also high in dietary fiber, making them essential for paleo dieters.

Essentially, all fruits are acceptable for paleo dieters, but wild berries are one of the most crucial. Our ancestors had to forage for wild berries in order to survive. While we are lucky enough to have berries more readily accessible, they are still one of the most valuable paleo staples thanks to their vitamin and mineral content.

Paleo Nuts

Throw out those peanuts, paleo dieters. They are not a nut, but rather a legume, which is prohibited in the paleo diet. Luckily, there are many more nutritious options to satisfy the nut lover. Walnuts and almonds are two of the most popular nuts among paleo dieters because of their high fat content and nutrient levels.
